The Arc of Walker County was incorporated in 1975 by persons interested
in the well-being and future needs of persons with mental retardation and other developmental disabilities. The
Arc of Walker County initially opened a small program for adults with mental retardation but has since expanded its programs
to include services for infants from birth to age 3, day habilitation, sheltered activities, supported employment, supervised
living, case management, community homes, and recreation for adults and children with cognitive, intellectual, and developmental
disabilities.
The Arc of Walker County is also
involved with a self-advocacy group, People First. The Arc of Walker County acts
as an advocate for persons with cognitive, intellectual, and developmental disabilities as the need arises and identifies
areas where the need for expansion for new services exists and pursues appropriate funding to see that needs are met.
