Early Head Start works with one- and two-year-olds in a classroom-based environment to develop social, academic and other skills. A two-year old boy who has had several surgeries to place and correct malfunctioning shunts in his brain enrolled in Early Head Start.
In the beginning, he did not speak, did not participate in activities and would often isolate himself during free play. Each morning he was reluctant to come into the classroom. Throughout the year, the teachers continued to work with him, encouraging interaction during class activities and free play.
By the summer he was speaking in short phrases. He is now a happy child who enjoys playing with his peers and participating in class activities all while greeting everyone with a beautiful smile!
